The Toll-Gate
by Georgette Heyer
This is one of my favourite Heyers, even if the crime plot isn't as strong as it could be. I love Jack's unconventional nature and his complete affection for the local people he finds himself surrounded with after embarking on his accidental career as a toll gate guard. The romance is genuinely touching and I also love Nell's quiet practicality. They're a couple who you know are going to have a great, fun married life surrounded by people that they like, and they're going to start it off by dancing at the wedding of Rose and her highwayman. <3
