This book is a perfect example of how I might be the problem and I’m simply not smart enough because two of my favs who I trust loved this book (@autumnintheoaks & @bookstagr.em) and now I fear I have disappointed them. Also, keep in mind this book was a National Book Award Winner so WHO AM I TO JUDGE.

This book is definitely a vibe for people who like “weird girl fiction” because the whole book was extremely odd. I’d also recommend that if you’re interested in character driven books then this one would be a good fit for you. Personally, I needed a smidge more plot to keep a book moving along for me.

The beginning started out so strong and I thought I was going to love it, but it ended up really dragging through the middle. We’d go off on tangents and I’m thinking “how does this relate back to the overall story?” Spoiler alert because Tess is a fantastic writer: all these threads DO come together, in time.

However, Tess Gunty didn’t win the National Book Award for nothing!! Her writing is interesting, memorable, and uses such bizarre metaphors that really stick with you. She has a way of writing that is so weird but relatable, and that’s an aspect of this book that I really loved.

I also found every character to be insufferable, which was probably the point, but for me this just missed the mark. If you have read this book and loved it please tell me why in the comments because I really, really wanted to love this one!
