Overall: Up All Night was a great short story collection with a diverse mix of representation and story types - each felt unique. I extra loved all the bisexual characters, disability rep, non-binary characters, and the mix of different straight and queer relationships. A well-edited collection that was super fun to read.
Story reviews:
Never Have I Ever by Karen McManus: Um WOW. 9.5/10 and that’s all I’ll say.
Like Before by Maurene Goo: Learning to let go of friendships you’ve outgrown, oof it hurts the heart, so realistic though, 8/10.
Old Rifts and Snowdrifts by Kayla Whaley: Cute. Snowed in teens with tension. We love to see it. 8.5/10
Con Nights, Parallel Hearts by Marieke Nijkamp: Comic Con anticipation and strong friendship. Surprisingly heavy, but good. 8/10. TW: Anxiety, child sexual and physical abuse.
Kiss The Boy by Amanda Joy: Light and cute, first kiss pact, and fun friendship. 7/10.
Creature Capture by Laura Silverman: Sci fi/ Pokémon go vibes but in a good way. Friendships old and new. 7.5/10. TW: HP reference.
Shark Bait by Tiffany D. Jackson: Twisty and unexpected, but a little too fast paced/ surface level. 6.5/10. TW: Racism/ microaggressions
A Place To Start by Nina LaCour: I love Nina LaCour and this story was my favorite thus far. 9.5/10.
When You Bring A Dog To Prom by Anna Meriano: Fun characters, strong friendships, cute crushes and a long prom night. 9/10.
Missing by Kathleen Glasgow: Pretty creepy and dark. Ghosts. Unlikable characters. 6.5/10. TW: Death of a mother, asylum reference and imagery.
What About Your Friends by Brandy Colbert: GREAT story of friendship and the college experience. I wanted more in a good way. 9.5/10. TW: Racism.
Under Our Masks by Julian Winters: Queer superhero coming out / first kiss story. We love to see it. 9.5/10.
The Ghosts of Goon Creek by Francesca Zappia: Ghosts. Friendship. Mystery. A cute story to round out the book! 8.5/10.
