I’m very conflicted while writing this review. I liked part of this book, but overall it didn’t catch my full attention. Although this book did have some background information and world-building in it, I don’t think it was enough for me to fully grasp the world I was reading about. I found myself confused by the politics and who people were and why they were important. I will preference this by saying I did not read the Remnant Chronicles. I was under the impression I didn’t have to in order to read this book, but I guess I should have. Nonetheless, I’m not sure if that would change my opinion of the book fully. I expected a larger fantasy element in this story and was disappointed by the lack of one.
The other thing that had disappointed me was the fact that most of the tension, and fighting between our main characters was due to withholding information from each other, when there wasn’t that much of a reason to do so. Things could have been said if both parties wanted to, but in the end chose not to due to stubbornness. Lastly, I was also under the impression this was an “Enemies-to-lovers” kind of story, but I have a hard time agreeing with that. I would say that Is the truth until chapter 15th. I would say then it was more of a “second chance” sort of relationship. Is that something to really be mad about? Maybe not, but It’s how I feel.
I did really enjoy the beginning half of this book. Where they were in the woods and trying to get back. That was when I was fully invested. Once they got back, the whole story seemed to flip and I got more and more confused. The other part of the book I enjoyed was the “found family” trope in this story. I like when people come together to solve issues, and become closer while doing so. The Ballenger Family and their bond stuck with me. Gave me Peaky Blinders type of vibe. Family over everything. Loyalty. It’s something I can understand. You do what you have to for family, which is probably why I did side with Jase on most of his actions…even if some of them were a little childish. The writing was well done. I did breeze through this book relatively easy. Her attention to detail, made it easy to picture specific scenes in my head.
Overall, I would say it wasn’t something I’m unhappy with having spent my time reading. I just wish it was how it was more of an Enemies-to-lovers fantasy story and not a Second chance mystery/thriller with small notes of fantasy. It kind of missed the mark for me.
