The Heinemann Book of African Women's Writing by Charlotte H. Bruner

4.0

This collection of short stories was published in the early 90s. The editorial style and comments are of their time, and jarring.

It seemed to me that wasn't the writers' fault. I wanted to read their work.
(Not by geography - in hindsight I should have read their stories in random sequence.)

Practically every single one of these stories is an absolute gem of place and moment and resonant experience. They are spectacular.
The only one I didn't love was as an excerpt from a novel, which was engaging but not complete in itself, so broke my reading rhythm.

Some quick and certainly incomplete googling suggests many of these stories might be hard to find anywhere else. So, if you can ignore intros and footnotes, and you're happy to disrupt the editorial order, I'd heartily recommend this collection.
