The Cat in the Hat
by Dr. Seuss
The Cat in the Hat must be Dr. Seuss' most famous creation. In his debut book he appears, uninvited, and behaves irresponsibly, recklessly, wrecking the house of two children in no time. Because their mother is away, a fish acts as a rather whining authority figure. Luckily, in the end the cat cleans up the mess he made with help of a bizarre machine.
This book was designed for beginning readers, and uses very few and very simple words. It's remarkable how Dr. Seuss managed to tell such a rich story with such limited material. Of course his tale is greatly enhanced by his dynamic drawings, which are even better than the text.
