I think my problem with essay collections is that I only read the ones that I already agree with. When you spend 250 pages going "yep, duh, uh huh, okay, yep" it can only hover between mildly interesting and boring. Hurley is a great author, I just already agree with too much of what she's saying for this to be amazing.
Plus, I do wish that she was more specific when she speaks about events or people, looking up the footnotes is tedious. If you are going to include footnotes, one or two sentences more than just the internet address to an article would have been worthwhile.
