The concept and world building of this story are very interesting, but the character building was disappointing. I am so use to Garth Nix's books painting this vivid world and populating it with characters that I am drawn to and invested in, but not this one. I felt like maybe Nix was trying to do too much in one book, because I feel like this could have been a fascinating series. I would love to get to know the characters more and see their friendship truly build, because in this book I was supposed to believe in the end they loved each other when in reality they only really interacted with only each other, from our perspective, maybe 3 times. It felt like a movie montage kind of friendship but even less concrete than that. It would have just enriched the world so much to actually care about the characters Either way I don't know that I would recommend this book to anyone, unless you want to just read about an interesting world with no investment.
