The Butcher of the Forest by Premee Mohamed

4.5

What a sad, strange little book.

It feels both complete and unfinished, but not in an unsatisfying way somehow. The story could go on, but it makes as much sense ending where it does as continuing.

The way the author uses creatures in this story to ask questions of monsters and the monstrous, innocence, sacrifice, and other big human ideas is so interesting, turning the mundane into the dangerous and giving the smallest of things their own magic.

With a dark, compelling fairytale atmosphere. Premee Mohamed invites readers into a world where the whimsical is warped and the path before all creatures is unclear.
