Ruthless Creatures
by J.T. Geissinger
DID NOT FINISH: 60%
I’ve given up on expecting great writing in books like this. Honestly, I’ve even given up on good writing and just rely on the vibe now. At first, ngl it was fun. Then it went downhill so fast I couldn’t even endure finishing the last 40%. The fact that the FMC is whiny and the MMC is a straight-up douchebag isn’t even what bothers me. It’s that in a romance book, there’s absolutely NOTHING that shows they love each other. Obsessed? Yep. Both traumatized in the past so they feel like they just need each other? Sure. Lusting constantly? Absolutely. But love??? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
I’ve accepted that not every book needs or should have a slow burn, but seriously what is going on here? I was already over it when they both agreed early on that they could never be anything "real" in the public or something like that... and then a few chapters later, that’s suddenly the main issue. Like what are we doing people??
Also, can romance authors stop with the token “female best friend” character who exists only to talk about men? Like we really can’t pass the Bechdel Test in a genre written mostly by women FOR women? Come on.
