Incidents in the Rue Laugier
by Anita Brookner
One of my favorite of Brookner's so far. How does it play out when two people make a rash life-changing decision based on the questionable judgement and bad luck of one of them? Rich and complex characters, no one digs into their internal lives better than Brookner. Also as I have come to expect from Brookner, the time period was hard for me to pinpoint. If she hadn’t mentioned 1971, I never would have known; her characters and situations always seem very old fashioned.
