Out of all the Darcy Coates novels I’ve read so far, this might have some of the least interesting characters. The main character, Daniel, is very selfless but also very stupid. This is one of those plots that everything would have been avoided if the characters practiced better communication. But hearing about the history of the manor and the family that lived there was very entertaining, easily the best part. The Kyle subplot felt like a bit of a cop-out, like Coates didn’t want to come up with anything better to push the conflict forward. This book was published a few years into her career but it kind of feels like an early effort, maybe that’s just me, idk. I’m finding with Darcy Coates that her books are a little hit-or-miss to an extent, and what I mean is that so far none of the books have been bad in my opinion and still fun reads, but some are vastly better than others. Oddly enough, her YA effort “Where He Can’t Find You” right now is my favorite from her.
