- Warning, the author [Delia Owens] has had many alarming accusations that allegedly include murder/racism/perpetuating racial sterotypes/etc] so please keep that in mind. I bought it at goodwill without knowing a thing about the book or author -
This book really captured my attention. The description's of Kya's environment drew me in. The food, though it was just grits and beets, still had me hungry. I loved hearing about Kya and her thoughts. Tate was nice. Chase deserved it. So I'm confused. From the beginning, I knew for certain it was Kya. Is this supposed to be a mystery to the reader? It's marketed as so, and many on social media were "shocked by the plot twist" and I'm confused. Are they shocked about Kya killing Chase or are they shocked about when/why/how Tate found out?
I was completely 100% sure from the first chapter that she did it. The set up, switching pov's/time/etc it was so obvious to me. I just figured it was a story about "Unwrapping how/why Kya did it/her life story" rather than "here's a murder that our main character is accused of but she didn't do it! Plot twist! She did!"
The thing that got me was how and when Tate found out. Like I knew as soon as he opened the journal he'd find out that way, but my heart was racing as I read it because I wanted to know his thoughts!
Anywho, this book is really conflicting to me. It's a three because it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great, because for a mystery, I want a twist that shocks me to the core. And I don't think this book is meant to be that.
