Spider-Man/Deadpool, Vol. 2: Side Pieces by Paul Scheer, Scott Aukerman, Nick Giovanetti, Joshua Corin, Penn Jillette, Gerry Duggan

3.0

This collection is more disjointed than the first installment, but that's a product of collecting an on-going series and not something I'm holding against this one.

The collection started all right with a goofy story about Spider-Man and Deadpool going to Hollywood, replete with all of the fourth-wall breaking jokes you might expect.

I also really enjoyed the next installment—the "real" first meeting of Spider-Man and Deadpool, complete with 60s style art. I especially appreciated Koblish's design for a 60s Deadpool costume. (This story felt a lot like an alternate history, which is part of why I enjoyed it so much.)

And I was also into the Christmas story about them taking down a murderous Santa. (It ends in the cutest way. … I swear. Murderous Santas aside.)

Despite all those strengths, the Penn & Teller issue was a real dud with some clunky writing that just tried too hard to break the fourth wall. The ones that have stuck with me the most are the alt history and this one, drowning out the general okay-ness of the other issues. (The last story proclaims that Spider-Man is Deadpool's "heartmate," please let that inform you how much I disliked the Penn & Teller issue.)

I don't think that any of these comics will really effect continuity for the rest of this series, so feel free to take my advice and skip that Penn penned issue.
