While not exactly what I was expecting, I don’t know what I was expecting, but, it’s quite the ride. A sometimes hard to read journey, but worth it, in the end.

Lacey May is 14, and an avid member of a genuine cult, in the suburbs of Fresno. Her mother is a beautiful mess of a woman who despite wanting to, never does right by her daughter. Her aunt is a selfish and hateful person. Her grandmother is a manipulative, horrid person who cares more about her taxidermy animals, than her own grandchild. And whom all submit to the cult.

All her life Lacey May has wanted her very own assignment from the pastor. Or as he claims to be, a god. Once she gets her period, she finds out what her assignment is.

This book is not light hearted, nor fun. The cult is scary and horrifying. The pastor is somehow charismatic enough to keep his followers from fresh water, and persist on soda and canned food, so they can prepare for his great rain miracle. And he has complete control. Which includes the men of the town.

At the root of this book is a resilience of women in the face of an oppressive male dominance. It’s of choices and consequences. It’s about belief in oneself, belief in something else, or to accept help from unexpected people. Lacey May may seem indoctrinated, and she is, but she’s constantly trying to understand her role in the world and whether everything she’s been taught is BS. And she was such a fascinating young woman. And a fascinating book.
