The Discomfort of Evening by Lucas Rijneveld

1.0

This book is absolutely disgusting. I understand what the author tries to do: explaining grief and suffering through the eyes of a child, but the language was incomprehensible (sure, it’s supposed to mimic the train of thoughts of a child but it’s very overdone. Too many metaphors and so many horrible, disturbing thoughts)! Also, the amount of detailed cruelty and sexual abuse is… why? Just why? What’s the reason behind it? To me it felt like it was all just for the shock value of it and I was absolutely disgusted. I love a book that makes me uncomfortable and squeamish, but this was not it. Never again (I can’t believe I had to read it for a literature class).
