Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff

thank god the second book is out!

i was expecting this to be a lot more supernatural horror heavy, but instead the real horrors were racists <3 each of these interconnected stories were so gripping and interesting, ruff does such a good job of fusing 1950s racism with the looming feeling of dread in the pulp fiction horror genre. the supernatural elements were thrown in a bit haphazardly, sometimes the introduction to it was a bit blink-and-miss-it, but i didn't mind so much. i think my favourite was probably Ruby's story, and of course the last one with everyone :)) i love a crossover. all the vignettes were interesting ofc, but i did find that i didn't get fully invested until all the characters' stories crossed-over at the end. i can't wait to read the second book, hopefully with more supernatural horrors!
