When You Trap a Tiger
by Tae Keller
I can see why the book was chosen for the Newbery. The story is interwoven with traditions of family, Korean folklore, and the relationships we build. Two sisters and their mom move back to spend the last few weeks/months with their sick grandmother. Lily is trying desperately to keep the magic alive so she can heal her grandma. Her character is complex, with feelings of invisibility and always making herself smaller for others around her. I liked the parallels of the tiger and Lily and Lily really trying to figure out who she is. I may have cried a little. Don't judge me. 4th grade and up.
