The second instalment in The Drowning Empire trilogy returns with more action, magic, secrets and lies. We follow characters from the first book as they navigate a crumbling empire. I’m not going to give you the synopsis because it’s definitely spoiling some first book plot points. If you haven’t read The Bone Shard Daughter you must! It’s such a strong first book I highly recommend.

While I enjoyed this second instalment it did have some second book woes. There’s a specific plot point I just didn’t jive with, nor do I find it believable at all. I know you’re thinking, well… it’s a fantasy book you need to suspend your disbelief. It’s not the fantasy elements or the magic that was unbelievable for me. It was a character development point. And that’s all I will say about that.

Mephi the Great, you carried this book all the way through. I can’t remember the last time I grew so attached to an animal sidekick. Maybe Appa and Momo from Avatar The Last Airbender? Yes, Mephi is that amazing and you have to meet him!

What Stewart does best is they keep you reading by keeping the pace quick. For a 500+ book I read it in about 3 days. It was really fast and interesting and the mystery only continued to unravel. The bone magic got darker and I’m here for a certain chaos inducing character.

Overall, I did enjoy it and I still recommend this series even though Bone Shard Emperor fell a bit short for me, 3.5✨.
