As it stands in April 2024, this book is in the top 3 best  books I've read this year. What I'm most impressed by is that this book was written by a self published indie author. Without a publisher and editor following behind her, I still found her book to be well written with great character and plot development.

This book has incredible world building, with an exciting and unique plot that includes foreshadowing and depth, and an appropriate rise and fall. It built up exactly as it should, with very little being rushed (except the romance). Emma had my attention from the first page, which is a talent in and of itself in my opinion. I'm excited to start book two.

I will also say, the fact that there wasn't an editor was definitely evident to me. There were parts of the plot and character interaction and dialog that would have benefited from editing. I'm also not fond of 1st person writing and I think this book could have been better in 3rd person. Also, as I mentioned above, the romance lacked the emotional build up I expect in a romance heavy plot like this. I enjoy the characters and the romance of the book, but I wasn't feeling the connection I should have felt and I expect that is because it didn't build slowly throughout the book.

Overall: 4 star read.
