Body Kintsugi by Senka Marić

emotional reflective medium-paced

I loved this, a fictional memoir based on the author’s own experiences with breast cancer. It’s narrated in the second person which usually doesn’t work for me but really did this time. Fragments from the narrator’s present, dealing with the cancer, having prostheses fitted, fighting infection after infection, are interspersed with episodes from their childhood, often also to do with illness but also small moments of comfort. The translation by Celia Hawkseworth was beautiful.

The only thing that didn’t sit right with me was the quite binary thinking of what makes a woman a woman. But it is also based in personal experience.
