The American Agent by Jacqueline Winspear

5.0

Loved this one. Maisie has really grown as a character. This is set during the Blitz, and Maisie and her friend Priscilla are ambulance drivers - reprising their efforts during WWI, only this time in London. One night a young American journalist rides along; later that same night she is murdered in her rooms at a boarding house for young women. One of her Maisie's old friends, Dr. Andrew Dene, makes a brief appearance to suggest that the Blitz may end up changing healthcare in Britain forever - given how many of the populace were affected by the bombings - I had never put it together that the NHS was born out of the war experiences of London and areas that were bombed. The story is full of details, and the one character who is referred to but does not make a personal appearance is the American Ambassador, Joseph Kennedy .... he does not come off that well in the book (and I learned things about his pre-war beliefs that I had not known before).
