The Secret History by Donna Tartt

5.0

The dead appear to us in dreams, said Julian, because that’s the only way they can make us ser them; what wesee is only a projection, beamed from a great distance, light shining at us from a dead star.

I had to read this again, I actually did the day before I finished it. I don’t have words, I think it’s one the best things I’ve reas this year, even ever. I’ve been reading people’s opinions (particularly the bad ones) and I keep disagreeing every time. So I’ll go through a few things:

- I’ve read that people complain about the structure and the story telling Tartt proposes. I couldn’t find it more appealing. Often I read ‘thrillery - mystery- murder” stuff, but I think TSH is well above that. It’s a study of character, even the meaning of life and being alive, if you will.

- The main characters are despicable: yes, and that’s why I find them so interesting, I could go hours about each of them, their layers and complexities. I’m still crying over the end, don’t think I’ll ever recover.

- Sexuality: again, found it super interesting, I keep stumbling upon theories about their sexuality and I just cannot make up my mind. I don’t think it matters that much, but they way Tartt lays out the relationship and dynamics of the group, it’s just amazing.

- Greek: ... should I say anything else?

I don’t think I can express how this books (and the a like) make me feel. I couls go hours and hours analyzing and basically becoming a Henry about every single aspect of the book.

(At the end, I thought CLLM was to meet Zeus, not HW. Can’t get over it, I’m hopeless. Their kids would have been the cutest)
