The Scalpel and the Silver Bear: The First Navajo Woman Surgeon Combines Western Medicine and Traditional Healing by Lori Alvord, Elizabeth Cohen Van Pelt

4.0

I read this book per the recommendation of Travis Roberts and Matt Kretizer. I like the approach it took to healing as I could relate this to my personal life and having a boyfriend who had a terrible car accident in November 2014. He had a very straightforward and clinical approach to his healing at the hospital he woke up in after a two-week coma. He says at the end of a miserable day of being tied down to a chair in his room with chaos all around, all he wanted was for someone to say "Hi, how are you?". Lori, the first Navajo woman surgeon talks about healing and how people can recover much quicker if they have genuine caring in their lives. After my boyfriend came back to Saint George, he had exceptional caring and genuine friendly staff in his life at the Inter mountain Healthcare Acute Rehab Center. They even invited him back later on to share what it was exactly that helped him recover so well at the center. We also do Navajo Sweat Lodge ceremony. I think a spiritual health goes hand in hand in some cases. Good book.
