Allegiant by Veronica Roth
3.0

THIS REVIEW HAS SPOILERS

I found Allegiant REALLY hard to get into. I did not like it nearly as much as the first two. I did not like the new format of switching back and forth between Tobias and Tris' perspectives. I also felt there were too many characters that were introduced only to die off before there was any character development (although that's really more of a complaint about the series in general).

The book fit the traditional trilogy format that we learned about through the Scream movies...when it's a trilogy, there is always something new that was not true from the get go. Or, in the words of Randy Meeks:

1. "You've got a killer who’s gonna be superhuman. Stabbing him won’t work, shooting him won’t work. Basically in the third one, you gotta cryogenically freeze his head, decapitate him, or blow him up." (Or release a toxic airborne serum that erases his/their memory)

2. "Anyone, including the main character, can die. This means you, Sid." (Ahem, Tris)

3. "The past will come back to bite you in the ass. Whatever you think you know about the past, forget it. The past is not at rest! Any sins you think were committed in the past are about to break out and destroy you." (Your city is not all there is in the world, not everyone you believe to be divergent is divergent, divergent is not necessarily a real thing, your mom is not who you thought she was, you promised you would never send your brother to his own execution etc. etc. etc.)
