4 Stars for Persepolis: The Story of a Childhood by Marjame Satrapi. Interesting, timely read. The author begins with these powerful notes: "I believe that an entire nation should not be judged by the wrongdoings of a few extremists. I also don't want those Iranians who lost their lives in prisons defending freedom, who died in the war against Iraq, who suffered under various repressive regimes, or who were forced to leave their families and flee their homeland to be forgotten. One can forgive but one should never forget."

Told in graphic novel format by the great-granddaughter of the last Shah of Iran, Satrapi gives us a first hand account of what life was like in Tehran in the 1980s. She witnessed the overthrow of the Shah’s regime, the triumph of the Islamic Revolution, and the life-altering effects of war with Iraq. This is the story of a child's view of growing up during turmoil, as well as a reminder of the cost of political repression.
