From Here to Eternity: Traveling the World to Find the Good Death
by Caitlin Doughty
This was a fantastic read - and I just want to talk about it and recommend it to everyone I see. And then they look at me like I'm crazy because the subject matter is pretty macabre. But the book was excellent! Tasteful and respectful of cultures and death, while still being entertaining, fast-paced, and so interesting!
Caitlin Doughty is a mortician who travels the world to learn about how other cultures reverence their dead - primarily what they do with the bodies. A deep love and reverence for those that have passed and how we come to terms with the physicalness of death runs through the book. Full of descriptive details and a sometimes-snarky, gallows humor that somehow manages to still be respectful of the dead and various customs, but highlights the differences from our cultural traditions in thought-provoking ways.
