This is just what a duology should be. All the good from book #1 was continued in book #2, from further explanations and new facets of the magic system and world to the characters' emotional journeys and growth. And I loved that the conflict of The Lightstruck was a direct result of the end of The Darkening: when your hopes and dreams are achieved, you must grapple with the new reality of them. The duology played with opposites—light and dark, queen and king, fear and courage—and presented them sensitively. Vesper and Dalca's struggles felt emotionally true throughout the book and Sunya Mara stuck the landing without too much sappiness.
