stephanie garber is fantastic at creating this world of caraval and intrigue and mystery, so i gotta hand that to her! this book was a four star bordering on five star until the end which i found to be weak and anticlimatic to the tone of the over all story.

what i liked:
* tella, surprisingly. a mc that fought for herself and while she did make stupid decisions, she made up for them through her own merits.
* tella and dante: hot, no notes
* jacks: serving cunt, all day every day
what i was not a fan of:
* SCARLET: how she was written in this book pissed me off T-T i liked her in the last book. what. happened???? I CANTTTTT. i dont get why tf she is trying to pursue the count AND julien even though she is obviously into him more. and at the end?? what the fuck do you mean "how do i know julien is right for me if i don't look at other options?" WHAT STOP ITTT. i just hate how she was written here and how she was virtually useless throughout the entire plot. i understand this is tella's story, but give her SOME purpose for the plot that isn't stupid as hell. ugh m so angry about this.
* dante and tella at the end. they confessed. we know they love each other. slay. HE LEAVES?? WHAT. WHY. it was literally left in the air, and tella was like "guess he never gave a shit" then what was ALL THIS FOR??
* the end: the fates are released, which is what we were scared about the entire book, and when it happens there is no reaction?? like "oh well. whoop de do"??? i understand it'll take them a sec to recover from being trapped in the cards but there was no urgency even though this was the worst outcome in the book, and it lowkey takes away the importance of dante releasing them to save tella.
i really did enjoy the first part of this but the ending sucked so bad for me that i have to talk it down a couple of stars because what?? here's to hoping "finale" can make it up to me.
