Rating: Loved it
This had me stressed out for so many different reasons. But I still loved all of it. I enjoyed the journey into who Dominic DeBlanc aka Dough was.
This was a complex story. Dominic was a troubled soul but he truly had a big heart. He sacrificed a lot for his loved ones. I loved how Rae Lyse crafted this story. You wanted to dislike Dom for his actions but at the same time you felt the heaviness that he faced.
Claudette was a shy oblivious girl who didn’t know what she was getting into when she got involved with Dom/Dough. But baby girl found out real quick. I loved how she made sure he was not taken advantage of and she looked out for him regarding his music from Day 1.
One of the aspects of this story that I loved included the life lessons that Claudette was getting. She was being taught by everyone on what not to do but in a way she still navigated in her own lane. I have been thinking about what the title meant as Claudette’s nickname was Sunflower. Even though the focus was on Dom/Dough it was as much of a coming of age story for Claudette as it was for Dom. Claudette’s character in a sense needed saving from herself in how she got mingled with Dom. But He had a light to him that he never saw because he felt he didn’t deserve it. They both needed saving.
Rae Lyse has a way of weaving social issues into her characters. This was a slow burn, however, as I’ve said before , the time she takes to build the characters is the time you get to know them personally and whatever trauma they may have experienced. I loved this story so much.
