The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle
by Haruki Murakami
Murakami is a wizard of magical realism. This book starts with meandering, disparate threads, but never ceases to engage or be profoundly strange and fever-dreamy. But then it all coalesces, and its aura of existential dread and detached reality become pieces of a larger puzzle. This book juggles horror, complex relationships, metaphysical and strange characters, and even Japanese war history, yet it never strays from its core value of looking within to find the truth. Beautifully written and masterful.
