Fire, Beautiful yet destructive just like her.
Everyone had the day they deserved
This book was presented to me a reimagining of Carrie. It os most definitely that! Except I would this so much more intriguing. We swept of in the life of Maddy, a girl so fair skin, that her white father has her race listed as white since birth. Maddy lives by a set of rules to avoid the town and others learning she is actually bi-racial. However, after an eventful day in gym class the whole school, including the town and world, all learn she is mixed. The chaos ensues after this and someone has the bright idea to have the town's first integrated prom, in the SOUTH. Let that sink in.
Tiffany Jackson gave me NO breathing room with this book. It is fast paced and I love it! It is told from multiple view points and if you get the audio, different voice actors. I was very pleased that these characters had layers for a book that moved so fast. I feel like Tiffany touched on things that we are continuing to address more freely/publicly in regards to colorism, the concept of passing and racism in general. As a Black person who went to a religious PWI (predominantly white institution) I definitely saw a little of myself in all the Black main characters.
I sincerely have nothing bad to say about this book except that I feel Tiffany could have gone even further with the iconic scene. Those people needed to have the day they deserved! And they did!
