Atmosphere will very easily be one of my top books of the year. It is so well done—the pacing, space, the exploration of the human experience—ALL the things and ALL the feels!

I love the various strong female characters. Training to be an astronaut is intense to begin with, and the societal expectations that surround being a female astronaut add another layer of complexity. I think the portrayal of secondary male characters is also done well. Some are helpful and supportive, and some are not. It is interesting to read about how Joan, Vanessa, and others navigate this in different ways, all the while keeping their own goals at the forefront of their minds. There is also a great sense of “found family” in this one, and I enjoy how this story highlights of the importance of human connection.

The love story is beautiful, moving, and heartbreaking all at the same time. It is complicated and real. I appreciate the focus on the small, sweet, daily things that make up a life. It highlights seemingly insignificant things that many people take for granted each day.

I also LOVED the exploration of space, the human condition, and the meaning of our existence. Something I was not expecting when I picked this one up was Joan’s connection between science and religion as well as the discussion around our shared responsibility to care for other living things and our planet.

The only thing I would change is the addition of an epilogue. I don’t need TJR to fill in all the gaps for me, but I would love to hear just a little more about what comes next for Joan, Vanessa, Frances, and others.
