Anastasia by Sophie Lark

Did not finish book. Stopped at 39%.
The Romanov’s have fascinated me for years. Not just Nikolai II Alexandrovich Romanov, his wife Alix and their children or even due to the manner of their deaths and the mystery that surrounded Anastasia and if she had survived, but all of their predecessors too.

When I saw this being highly recommended in my book groups, advertised as a “What if the Romanov’s lived in a world with magic and Anastasia had the greatest of it all” / “romantic rewrite of the animated movie” I was immediately sold and downloaded it off Kindle Unlimited.

Unfortunately, the author has not made a single one of her characters likeable and enjoyable to read. I already knew Anastasia was tempestuous, mischievous and a bit of a whirlwind from historical sources, but in this story she is downright rude, arrogant and just loathsome.

Neither Anastasia or her “love interest” Damien (which is an odd choice of name for a Russian/Cossack) are the main character in this book. And to be honest, none of the other Romanov’s are either…the main character is Russia itself. It dominates the plot, but in such a confusing manner that only 230 pages in I was struggling with the historical timeline matching up with the ages of the children.

This book is 686 pages, nothing has happened 230 pages in and I personally could not take another 400+ of confusing plot, one-dimensional characters and historical inaccuracies.

The only redeeming feature was Artemis, bloody love that bird.
