It succeeds at entertaining the reader, but it is definitely inferior when compared to the first book. The plot suffers from "sequel syndrome" by adding a whole lot of backstory to the childhood of one of the characters just so those events can tie in to the plot of the novel in a very unlikely way. I was able to look the other way for the sake of enjoyment that is not the only problem. The plot does have a few small twists here and there, but overall most events are predictable and the great mistery of the novel is not particularly difficult to crack, but for some reason the characters take their sweet time.
