Just Like Magic by Sarah Hogle

5.0

Will there ever be a Sarah Hogle book I don’t adore? Maybe. Probably. But this one isn’t it.

Of course, I’m biased for many reasons. I love winter (though the Bay Area doesn’t get much of one). I believe in a full holiday season from the end of November through the New Year. (My season actually the end of October, if I’m honest.)

Finally - and as already mentioned - this is a story by Sarah Hogle. Each book of hers has been such a sweet surprise. The only thing I know going into any of them is that there’s going to be a happy ending. Everything else is just excellent storytelling. Her versatility as a writer impresses the hell out of me every single time.

Hogle worship aside - Just Like Magic doesn’t even try to be realistic. It’s wildly fantastical. Though the story tries to convince you that there are rules, truly there are none. Certainly there are none that a reader can predict. And that’s okay. You just have to sit back and savor it.
