Tokyo Ueno Station
by Yu Miri
a story of coincidences, lack of luck, and invisibility. the complicated history and policies of japan are very clear in this book. does a homeless person need to be a wandering ghost to be completely ignored and neglected by society? of course, this isn't native to japan only. it made me reflect on how much we can treat people as nuisances.
the main character reminisces on his past and present life, retelling personal events, historic moments, and overheard conversations. it's an incredibly dual book, as it captivated me with beautiful and wonderful passages but completely lost me with others.
overall, this book had some disappointing segments but it was also deeply touching
