I was not prepared for how quickly I would be consumed and engaged by the stories of the women in this book. I am predisposed to love interconnected short stories, and if you ever wanted to try one out this is one of the first I would point you to since I think its expertly done. Each chapter has 3 stories that are interconnected but even across the chapters you can see how these stories intersect and I found all of that incredibly satisfying but even without these interconnections the individual stories were strong for me. I also really appreciated the diversity of experiences within these pages. The main idea is that we are following Black women in England (there is a nonbinary point of view as well) but there are perspectives that span the 20th century, different career paths, different socio economic backgrounds and of course different ethnic backgrounds and every story was given nuance and the characters were incredibly flawed humans that came to life even in the short amount of time we are given to know them. This work also gets bonus points for helping me escape my anxiety in a week where I was having a very rough time. I will read anything else this author puts out.
