Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

this review is confusing to write, because on one hand i sincerely enjoyed the book and wouldn't dream of rating it below 4 stars, but on the other i can't see myself picking up the next installment in the series.

the characters: karou, a strong protagonist i easily rooted for. zuzana, her charming and funny best friend; kaz, her crazy ex whose purpose in the plot i couldn't quite seem to place but whom i hope becomes a bigger character in the other books; brimstone, her foster father of sorts who gave off all sorts of red flags one moment and was my favourite character the next; and, of course, akiva.

akiva was a good love interest and i enjoyed his perspectives. the insta love is forgivable given the twist— and i didn't hate the heaps of backstory post-twist the way others did, though i did hate the twist that followed immediately after.
why would akiva kill brimstone and co.? yes, they were the enemy, but he was clearly already devoted to karou at this point considering he went to such lengths to find her and yet he'd kill her family without a second thought. it was incredibly frustrating to see especially since brimstone was a character still with so much to offer.

it's my disliking of this twist that puts me off reading book two as i'm not interested in seeing it dragged out as a source of conflict for an entire book. i feel like this would have worked well as a standalone if not for the situation with the portals.
