War of the Spark: Ravnica by Greg Weisman

3.0

As a Magic the Gathering fan, I looked forward to reading this story about the latest set. The story filled in a lot of details (sometimes too much detail) about what happened in Ravnica that day.

MTG fans will like the book, but if you don't know much about Magic, this book likely isn't for you. The writing is pretty weak as well; not very sophisticated. Also, there are a lot of points where the author goes into boring detail about what the Guilds are and that sort of lore thing. I'm guessing that is for the non-MTG fans, but they likely won't be reading this book. For those of us who are familiar, this amount of detail took away from the story.

There was a lot of "telling" instead of "showing" what was happening. These kinds of things could have been left out and made more room for us to really get to know WHO the characters really are. What are their motivations? What are they afraid of. That type of thing.
