An interesting novel and a strange choice for the debut novel by a young and unmarried author. This book, through diary entries, tells the story of a young woman who has an affair with her husband's business partner. Most of the book is consumed with the guilt that she feels about this affair and her struggles to locate her true self within her roles as mother and wife. I believe this book was considered sensational when it was published in Norway in 1907, but by today's standards it's quite tame.

I'm glad to have read something by this Nobel Prize winning author. I'd like to tackle her Kristin Lavransdatter series at some point, but it's a bit daunting. This was a much easier start.
