Son of the Shadows by Juliet Marillier

3.0

This was a frustrating read. I really enjoyed the first book and was expecting the second to be just as engaging. It took a while for me to become interested in the story, but that did not last long. There are so many things I found annoying in the book.

The first book was more descriptive; it was "show, don't tell." This book was the opposite and some of the "telling" was a bit repetitive. For a girl who was taught as a child how to use weapons and fight, Liadan does not get into much action. Most of the action that occurs in the book does not involve Liadan. There is a lot of talking, too much talking in my opinion.

Liadan got a bad case of Stockholm syndrome. She fits in almost immediately with Bran's group, a team of notorious mercenaries. She was even thinking of leaving a family that she cares SO much about for a man she's only known for less than a week. Huh.
SpoilerI don't understand what she finds attractive about Bran. I personally would not like a guy who hates my family(and doesn't tell me why), who is a killer, or who keeps telling me he really does want to stay with me, but he can't because he's baaaaaaad.

I didn't like a lot of the choices that Liadan made. At least she stubbornly stuck to it to the end.
