Ancient Images by Ramsey Campbell

3.0

This book is close to thirty years old at this point, and as another tale in the found media landscape, has a few years on my preferred tales like Night Film and Flicker. This story surrounds an old and rare Bela lugasi film that has appeared to make people go mad or worse when it is presented, and, after the death of a local film buff, we go deep inside the existence of the film itself and why it is so rare and why it causes problems.

It’s hard to say it’s flawed. From a modern point of view, it misses a lot of what makes more modern books readable, but that’s like saying an older classic isn’t good. It’s just a strange pacing and a weird read that, ultimately, only kind of worked for me when I was looking for more. I would have loved this as a teenager, I think, but coming to it this late? Maybe that’s the problem.

Closer to a 3.5.
