Death in the Clouds by Agatha Christie

3.0

I really liked the case, BUT there’s mention of racism and weight stigma by a couple of characters. This is an excerpt from their dialogue about things they liked and disliked: “They didn’t like fat women and admired really jet-black hair. They disliked very red nails. They disliked loud voices, noisy restaurants and negroes.”

This book was published in 1935, and I read it in 2024 when things have more or less improved, but I can’t help feeling angry about it. It also makes me sad to think that this kind of comments were commonly made, that it was “normal” to think/say something like that. Moreover, one of these characters is the heroine of the story.
