The Spaniard's Marriage Bargain by Abby Green

5.0

The story opens with Rowan Carmichael, a woman of twenty-seven, who is feeling out of sorts at a luxury hotel. She is there to meet with her solicitor, to consult how to get back to her baby, and her husband, both of whom she had had to abandon two years before. But before that meeting happened, a little boy stumbles near her, a boy with the same violet eyes as her, and behind that comes Isandro Vicario Salazar, her husband, seeing whom she has a dead faint.

Isandro couldn't believe his eyes, he hated her guts. Rowan, his wife, who left him and her newborn son, minutes after the birth. What he didn't know is that she is in pain, too much pain. She's just recovered from a terminal illness, and the first thing she remembers is to see her son. But of course, he believes she is as mercenary as they come and is after his money. So, he proposes divorce instead to get rid of her permanently.

Les than two years ago, she had left a note with the express purpose to hurt. And hurt he was, and in turn he vowed to hurt her now, with Isandro setting conditions for her contact with his son. For which she agrees to travel with him to Seville from London. Theirs had been an arranged marriage, to save his business Rowan's father had agreed to an agreement with Isandro on the condition that he marries Rowan and saying that she would inherit her mother's money. Just by looking at her, Isandro thinks that there is something wrong with her; but, the next instant he doesn't believe her as she had callously left her newborn son. On the other hand, I couldn't believe the sacrifice Rowan made to ensure the emotional wellbeing of her son, to the extent of leaving him like that. She still has nightmares about the time she had to spend apart from Zac, her baby.

It was an emotional journey after that, as time and again Rowan had had to prove herself a worthy mother to her own son in the eyes of Isandro. I salute her spirit for that. There are a lot of things going on in the story that kept me hooked all throughout. It was endearing to read about her uncertainties, vulnerabilities, after so long a time spent away from her home. What was really surprising was that Sandro had noticed her more than normal illness during her pregnancy, yet not willing to find out why it was so.

This was such an emotional story. Nowhere did it seem to be a marriage bargain! And with a wonderful ending. It made me cry.

This is Book 1 of The Marriage Bargain Series. I have heard Book 2 is a boring read. So, I'm straightaway skipping to Book 3.
