Anything but Minor by Kate Stewart

4.0

A sweet and funny book, where the nerd gets the jock and her 80’s movie happily ever after.

Title: Anything But Minor
Author: Kate Stewart
Series: Balls in Play
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Main Characters:

Alice Boyd left Dayton, Ohio to get away from her overbearingly strict mother and try to live her life on her own terms. She takes a job as a flight instructor in Charleston, and even though it’s taking her out of the air full time, exploring her new city and trying new things more than makes up for it. She is ready to make up for her sheltered childhood and young adulthood by trying everything she can and Googling everything she can’t.

Rafe ‘Bullet’ Hembery is a minor league pitcher for the Charleston Swampgators. He’s been waiting years for the call up to the majors, and this year has to be his year.

Plot/Conflict:

In the process of discovering her new city, Alice stumbles into a Swampgator game and immediately falls in love with baseball…. And baseball pants. A chance meeting at a pub after the game has her tripping over her tongue when she meets the star pitcher, Rafe. With a warning that Rafe’s womanizing ways will leave her broken hearted, the two settle on being friends - which of course has Rafe chomping at the bit to get in her panties. But as the two spend time together, Rafe can’t help but be drawn to Alice’s nerdy humor and laid back attitude… but with his impending switch to the majors, there couldn’t be a worse time to decide to settle down with one woman.

Loves:

I loved Alice, flat out hands down. She was very different from a lot of female characters I have read lately. I loved her adventurous spirit, all the new things she wanted to do, new friends she wanted to make. Lately outgoing heroines have been few and far between for me, and I liked that here. I also liked that she could be smart and astute over her emotions and what she wanted out of a relationship. She wanted her movie story tale, and she wasn’t settling for anything less.

Likes:

I really liked the humor throughout the book. Sometimes is was corny and silly. Embarrassing urination moments, falling bookcases during sexy times, that kind of stuff. But other times it was surprisingly deep. It had good emotional range for me.

Peeves:

The pacing was off for me. I found in spots that I was ready for the end, and that it was dragging through unnecessary whining and emotional flipflopping, particularly at the end, but also prior the the actual “hook up” of the couple in question.
