poliver 's review for:
The Godfather
by Mario Puzo
A rare case of the film being far superior to the book. I love the movies and see how they did a masterful job of rearranging and combining elements of the novel into two separate films. But this isn't a review of the movies. The book is episodic, sometimes riveting, other times convoluted and highly sexist (I know that is part of the culture but still). Great chapters were followed by mediocre ones giving the book a mixed bag feel. Some chapters, particularly the one about Lucy and her "female parts" problem was one of the most ludicrous and cringworthy things I've ever read. There are some startling changes in the book (compared to the film) which are fun. Overall, the book was disappointing, especially after seeing it on many "must read" lists.
