"This was the beauty of sleep - reality detached itself and appeared in my mind as casually as a movie or a dream."

I know this book is popular, particularly in Booktok spheres, which can make some people hesitant picking up books like this. This book, however, was actually pretty good and has made me open to reading Moshfegh in the future. It's not the greatest book of all time, or a five-star read, but it is pretty decent.

The main character is very privileged but she's also very complex and Moshfegh does a great job of presenting that through the first-person narration. Especially as this book is 280 odd pages and the main character is sleeping away a year, that is no small feat. It is a book that takes a glimpse into the attitudes of the early 20th Century, showing how far we have come with come things (eg. body positivity) and how far we still have to go in others (the arts and it's relationship to class.)
