I normally love Neal’s books, but as someone with chronic pain and ADHD I was not impressed with how meds for both conditions were portrayed. Trying to anthropomorphize drugs and make their main motivation to hurt rather than help is simply the wrong move, and does a disservice to those unfortunate enough to become addicts, and those who use these drugs without issue.
