This series devolved into formulaic, mindless entertainment many years ago, but every once in a while, there's a little glimpse of something new and different. I really liked Ranger's storyline in this installment -- I won't say more (because spoilers) but it was quite compelling and involved some highly entertaining Stephanie/Ranger field trips. Still, I also had to wade through all the other predictable elements: Grandma Mazur will cause a scandal at the funeral home; Mr. Plum will quietly die inside at the kitchen table; Stephanie will lose at least one car to an explosion, etc. I'm hoping Ms. Evanovich will finally get bored of writing the same thing and inject some new life into the series, which is why I keep slogging through these ...
